Thank (a) Dog That’s Over!
Happy Sunday, everyone. Wow, what a week that was with our Queen Eleanor going on a big adventure (across the street) for a couple of days. Before we move on with rescue as usual, we wanted to give a huge shout out to a very special dog named Charlie.
Charlie is a 2-year-old rescue who works at Pine Lane Farm, where his mom, Brynn, is the barn manager and trainer. He is part hound and has come to see and say “hi” to us a few times at rescue while making his rounds.
We were actually (and literally) on our way to pick up a tracker and dog Thursday, while Charlie was headed out to the back pasture with Brynn and Waylan, another one of Brynn’s rescues. That’s when this handsome boy “spotted” something curious in the distance.
What is it, boy?
“I noticed he had picked up a scent, but assumed he was just tracking one of our many cats,” Brynn said. “He kind of dug around a spot covered in brush and then I noticed a bright red something. I called him off and moved closer, just to make sure it wasn’t some trash.”
That little bright red bundle of “trash” turned out to be our Eleanor … and she was not reacting to the commotion. Brynn feared the worst. After all, she had been missing for two days, and it had literally been freezing outside. When Brynn yelled at Charlie to stay away, Eleanor picked her head to see what was going on. She was clearly cold, dehydrated and very weak, so Brynn scooped her up and rushed her to the vet, where she met Mike and Donna.
Hang on, baby girl!
It was a scary night, but with fluids (and a lot of warmth!), our girl perked back up and is now back at the ranch, resting up from her grand adventure. What she did during those two days she was gone, we’ll never know. We had combed the area many times in the hours leading up to her (second) rescue, but without Charlie’s sleuth skills, we may have never found her … or in time.
Our Christmas Miracle
We were all praying for a “Christmas miracle” to find Eleanor. Everyone showed up in droves to help — walking the woods and going door to door, putting up flyers, calling the vets/shelters, and posting anywhere and everywhere we could find to bring her home. All of our rescue dogs are special to us, but this girl? She’s beyond special. She’s been with us for years as a sanctuary dog and is one of our own. After losing Eli a couple of years ago to cancer, she is the very last of our “originals,” and we want to keep her around for as long as she’ll have us.
I Wanna Thank You
Thank you to Charlie and Brynn for everything. We can’t express our gratitude enough … but we hope we tried, i.e. we hope Charlie is enjoying his reward. 🙂
And Eleanor? We’d like to thank you to never, ever, ever do that again!
