Recap of January
It’s that time again: To look back on the year and highlight the events that impacted the rescue–and the dogs–as a whole. We said it in 2012 and in 2013 and we’ll say it again for 2014–this year, we helped rescue and re-home more dogs than we have since the days Jimmy was with us! Woo-hoo! We also grew in sponsor, foster and volunteer numbers, which was greatly needed. We continue to need both on any given weekend, but things have definitely improved over the last few months.
Numbers are great, but nothing is as wonderful as the dogs themselves. They are the true stories and the reason we do what we do. So, without further ado, let’s kick things off with a recap of January!
Doing What We (Have to) Do
We kicked off 2014 doing what we (unfortunately) have to do most of the year: Raising funds. We had made a trip to the shelter around Christmas to pick up little Ernie, only to find out he had a big brother, Bert. They had both been dumped by their human. We couldn’t leave Bert there to be put down (as often happens when shelters close for the holidays), so we brought them both to the rescue. They had been neglected and were in pretty rough shape–everything from bad teeth, to heartworms, to skin/fur issues. Thanks to your generosity in their fundraiser, we were able to treat all of these issues and, eventually, find homes for both of them this Christmas!
Come Together … Right Now
We didn’t have an official Vol Day scheduled for January, but more than half the team showed up on Jan. 4 for an Impromptu Vol Day! The best thing about that day? Poor Isabella, who had spent months screaming bloody murder (we’re not exaggerating) in her kennel because she wanted to be in a home, went to foster care with our awesome vol, Wonder Donna. Suffice it to say, she settled right back into a home situation, never made another peep, and is living the good life with her forever parents. She even comes back out to see us!
A-Barn Huntin’, We Will Go
After spending years in the kennels, kicking up dirt and tossing around hay in boredom, Frazier left the rescue (with his fan club of five volunteers) on Jan. 12 to attend a barn hunt class with Atlanta Barn Hunt Classes. Although it did not turn out to be his calling (he doesn’t have much of a prey drive), he thoroughly enjoyed his afternoons out and about … and the stops at Zaxby’s on the way back. 🙂 Months later, this awesome little man would leave the kennels for good and make a new place for himself on Mom’s ottoman … and couch … and anywhere else she wants to sit. Stay tuned for June …
Hannah Takes Huge Baby Steps
Hannah made a huge step in her life when she went to foster care on Jan. 12. After spending her first several months running from everyone at rescue and the last part of 2013 learning to trust, she was ready to move on to greater things and live in a home with daily trust and direction. She spent several months with Pam, Bonnie and their pack, learning things every dog should know and enjoy–from sharing, to trusting, to playing. She is now in another wonderful foster home with Belinda, growing a little each and every day, and still looking for her forever home.
Broken Bones Won’t Keep This Boy Down
A little boy with a broken leg (temporarily named Breeze) arrived at rescue in January. It was debatable as to whether his leg could be saved or not. It was not debatable that he needed a foster home with a lot of TLC … and ASAP! Sharon Brewster stepped up to the plate to take him home and take care of him during his healing time … and he never left. He is now fully recovered and known as Ossa. He has also served as a foster brother to other GA JRT rescues, including Sam and Sparky.
